![]() 20041219 Unsilent Night Recap
We attended Phil Kline's Unsilent Night demonstration last night. It was a spectacular. The starting point was the arch in Washington Square park. At least 500 people had gathered with a third as many boomboxes. Phil distributed tapes to everyone with a player. Promptly at 7pm, he directly everyone to press play at the same time. It was a symphony of ambient music. Each tape was different, unique with a different arrangement of sounds. It was predominantly chimes and bells -- like a cathedral sounding off on a holy day. But more angelic and harmonious. We then starting marching in a loose column, much like locusts (the good kind of locusts) headed towards Thompkins park. We clobbered our way through traffic -- we stopped Broadway and 1st Ave for a good 5-10 minutes each. Drivers were not amused. They added to our choir with a cacophony of horns. On some streets, near St Marks for example, our mass took over the entire street. Shopkeepers rushed to their windows to see what was going on, and people in their apartments above leaned out their windows and cheered us on. We ended in Thompkins park and formed a circular gathering and stood listening until the last tape had stopped playing. Then as quickly as we had come together, we dispersed and went about our own ways.
