Ladies and Gentlemen, Sufjan Steven's backup singer Katrina Kerns

So, like many, I thought I was in love with Sufjan Steven's backup singer and xylophonist Katrina Kerns -- or, like I said, at least I thought.

I didn't even know her name, until last night when my interest was stroked at Katie Deedy's birthday party (which, btw, was quite a carnival -- the only thing I remember vividly was climbing to the top of a young tree outside Clem's and hearing a branch snap, causing me such deep remorse that I promised then and there to return a week later to plant another tree near it. I will do this in 6 days.). Anyway, at KTDD's party, I talked to Janelle about my infatuation with The Backup Singer (I would only make this a topic of conversation with Janelle, because she, of course, is in love with Sufjan and understands exactly what I am feeling). She told me her name was Katrina (Janelle has a cousin or friend who is friends or cousins with the bugle player in Sufjan's band). Anyway, Janelle continued to say that Katrina is a Ford model and that she probably isn't dating Sufjan, mostly because there are rumors that he is gay, which I don't believe and think were probably spurred by the hordes of insecure boyfriends of girls, like Janelle, who do indeed love Sufjan more than them. At the news of her possible singledom, I was lifted by clouds, and, considering the few pints of PBR I had thrown back, calling Ford to get her details made PERFECT SENSE last night ...

Good thing I didn't call?

Janelle followed up with an email this afternoon to pass along a link to a video of Katrina talking. I perked at the thought!!! But, it took only a few moments of watching before my balloon of joy was pierced by an arrow of sorrow. Just watch for yourself! Is she a little slow? No no no -- the question was really really hard!!!
Would you have gotten into the industry if it weren't for Model Search America?
If I were I her, I would have had my publicist on the phone just seconds after the interview ended, demanding to know why the questions weren't approved in writing BEFORE the Q and A. Jesus Christ! How personal can those SO-CALLED VIDEO JOURNALISTS get?

+++

Anyway, Mom and Dad, she's really cute, and so nice. You'll like her.

Update: I just read this a month after posting it, and I can't get over how much of a jerk I seem. Really, this was just an amateur's attempt at a ha ha funnny thing. I realize she was awkardly cornered into taping that promo ... But, it sure makes good material for a roasting!

Someone at work told me it was the total truth that Sufjan was gay (which I should have made him prove but didn't) and it totally stomped my huge crush on him. I can't really explain why, but I can't have crushes on gay guys. I think maybe it's because I know I'd have no change of ever being picked out of the crowd with his gaze, called up on stage to sing with him and then run away with him if he's gay.
So I like knowing that it's possibly just a rumor, so I can continue to have a high school crush on him! even if I am married....eh..

no, no, no: the question was asinine! clearly she was contractually obligated, or something like it, to answer that question, that way.

my problem is that it was the WRONG ANSWER! clearly this woman would have gotten into the industry without them. i mean, come on. most beautiful girl in the world, hands down.

i've had a girl crush on her for over a year (i declare my love here). happy anniversary, katrina! you sweet thing, you. *sigh*

attractive people are always a thousand times more irresistable when they can play instruments. she was probably hired to distract the boys in the audience -- the same boyfriends who were insecure about their girlfriends fawning over sufjan, who, gay or not, will always remain hot.

What's the big deal? She seems professional and career savvy in this clip

"Katrina, we've got a camera set up here in the studio. Would you say a few words for our promo video?"

You've got to give her a break, it seems like a combination of nerves, being caught off guard, maybe low blood sugar. I'm serious.

is she slow? i think that she is slow because slow she is, which was a vehicle for her being slow, that is. Slow.

I strangely enough had the same , with the same video, on the same day, the whole thing wouldn't be THAT wierd but my name is Zack as well. So what are the odds of two Zach's posting the same about the same subject on the same day I'd say one in a lot, but thats not scientific.

Sufjan needs to stop announcing his concerts until, say, the day before. That way I'd stand a chance of getting tickets :^)

in a fit of boredom actually, i've just gone to google and typed in the words 'sufjan stephens, gay' and oh look, here we are. my new reason to believe is because of that song 'casimir pulaski day' which is TOTALLY about this guy he had some kind of relationship with. anyway. that's my source.

just so i dont feel weirdly anonymous, basically.

i grew up with Katrina and have known her since she was a wee little baby. I have pictures of us two together in diapers to prove it. She is VERY beautiful and VERY intelligent. ( and no lazy eye ) She is the most well-spoken kind person...oh yea... and i think Sufjan is gay. Well i just say that to make my little fantasy better. But since i know Katrina AND i am gay myself, i can put to rest all of the questions.

I totally agree, that guys don't usually wear blouses. And this song isn't the one that made me think he was gay. Now I can't remember which one it was, but it is on illinois, maybe the one with the wasps? But not Casimir Pulaski day.

When I first saw her in the promo shot, I thought she was quite beautiful. Ever at a concert; they're just beautiful people, I mean, such skill, such art...

Sufjan gay? Does this add or take away from his music? I think it is, by far, irrelevent...
Crushes Notwithstanding... [?]

I think the thing is, whether you're girl or a guy, you want to somehow be in love with Sufjan, have some kind of intimacy. There's something so charismatic about his music.

His songs are often stories (I believe) about other people that he tells from the first person perspective, so we really don't know whether he's relating a personal incident or not.

Hi there. I actually came across your blog whilst I reminisced about high school. I actually went to high school with one Katrina Kerns. I performed with her in the school talent show and had a few classes with her. I wasn't particularly close with her as she always seemed somewhat aloof. One day, she's be real cool and social with me, the next, she'd act like she didn't know me. It's hardly like I ever hit on the girl (as we were both awkward looking teenagers, and I never had confidence around females at the time anyway). I guess she's finally decided to take on modeling and also ended up in a band that I've never heard of. If you ever see her again, tell her that Minsu, the oboist, says hi ;)

Katrina is an amazing amazing person! She is truely beautiful inside and out! Anyone who has anything bad or sketchy to say about her obviously doesn't know her!!! She's great!

I don't think Sufjan is gay, and in The Upper Penisula he mentions his wife in lyrics. Therefore, lyrics can't be the sole basis of determining his sexual orientation. Is he with Rosie Thomas? I know the baby thing was a joke, but are they a couple? No matter what, I still love his music.

He sings in To Be alone With You, about a guy who left his wife & family to be with him..but that man climbed into a tree & he never knew the man who loved him.

It could be just sweet lyrics, but I dunno. There's also a song on the Illinois album where he sings about haveing a crush on his best friend...oh well, one thing is a fact, as it is said allot round here: he's HOT.

This is weird. I just assumed he was gay. Do you fans not see his musical thread? The Hidden Cameras, The Magnetic Fields, Belle and Sebastian, Rufus Wainwright, Antony etc.?

Faron Young wrote 'To Be Alone With You'? haha

Faron WAS gay but he wrote, 'Alone With You'. Totally different song.

It doesn't make any difference to me whether Soof is gay or not.

His music is incredible. Absolutely amazing stuff.

I also adore Rufus Wainwright's music and I am still very hetero.

It just seems to me that artists in general seem to be more open in their flare and tastes if they ARE gay. It gives the artist a sense of freedom to explore the fancy bits of melodies and the flare that a straight dude wouldn't wanna toy with.

I, on the other hand, enjoy being boistrous or gentle, my writing tends to be a bit free-er due to this fact.

My viewpoint.

And yeah, I'm a straight Christian

I agree.
And honestly, I'm hoping he's straight. Really, really. Just because I have an enormous crush on him. I'm not homophobic or anything, I'm just the hopeful type - that I could make a folk singer fall in love with me [hahaha].
I definitely believe though that he writes his songs specifically different points of view, which would explain a few of the songs' content.
But then again, maybe we're taking Sufjan too literally. He's too intelligent for simple lyrics, so I'm thinking that his genius, mixed with a bit of his faith conjure up something quite brilliant.
I've heard some Christian takes on his lyrics, and they made a lot more sense [such as, you went up on that tree, etc. in 'To Be Alone With You'].
Regardless, I'm in love.
Sufjan, I'm yours.

Hi, I'm Zach. I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated from Wake Forest. After college, I moved to Manhattan to get serious about a company I ran with friends. We sold it to Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp in 2006. I just wrapped up with a project I co-founded called Vimeo and left CV to focus on being a twenty-five year old.

I have another blog called Copy and Taste, where I post about learning to cook.

I live in Brooklyn now.
