The 'looming giant' Chinese economy has a GDP that is $400 billion less than the healthcare sector of the U.S. economy. via Ethan.

From 1994-2004, China averaged an annual GDP growth rate of 8.3%, while the US averaged only 3.3% over the same period*. China is still a developing country. Comparing the US healthcare sector to the Chinese GDP is like comparing apples with oranges. Comparing long-term GDP growth is a more relevant comparison. But what was the point of the post in the first place? Can you put it into context?

Andrew,
The post was a raised eyebrow towards U.S. healthcare. It stunned me that this sector alone could exceed China's entire GDP. My point is that China's GDP is huge, and will quickly grow to become the world's largest, yet at the moment the U.S. healthcare alone is still larger and its sheer size is rarely acknowledged or understood by the public.

Aside, I disagree with your opinion that this is similar to comparing apples with oranges. Actually, I think it is more like comparing a whole apple with another slice of apple.

Hi, I'm Zach. I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated from Wake Forest. After college, I moved to Manhattan to get serious about a company I ran with friends. We sold it to Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp in 2006. I just wrapped up with a project I co-founded called Vimeo and left CV to focus on being a twenty-five year old.

I have another blog called Copy and Taste, where I post about learning to cook.

I live in Brooklyn now.
