![]() I received a 'secret invitation' to register for Riya's Beta release. After I signed up, I sent the URL to some friends to see if it worked for them too. It did. So, I'm thinking it might work for you, as well, and maybe that's exactly what they want. Anyway, let's try it out. Register here. Riya, most simply, is Flickr + face recognition. You upload photos and tag peoples' faces. Over time, Riya learns and knows who a person is, without you having to tag them. What an exciting and scaring future this is! Just think about all those times you've stood in the background of a stranger's photo. The photographer won't know who you are, but Riya will! You can't escape the recognition engine, either, unless you avoid photos altogether. Anytime you pose willingly for a friend, they're going to tag you, and Riya's gonna learn. 11

The text recognition functionality is unexpected, but rad. 1:51 PM dianne said... hmmm...scary? interesting? privacy concerns? 4:59 PM Papa_John said... I can see some fun with this program and doing image searches of prolapsed rectums. Other than that one use alone, this program would be just another clone in a sea of crappy Orwellian novelty kiosks. What if you type cacti? Will it know to find two??? 6:12 PM Miguel said... the technology is not that advanced to start assumming we'll be able to be identified if we're in the background of a stranger's image. Scientists working on computer vision have not been able to reach such levels of accuracy. i don't think a small startup would either... at least at this point. One fundamental thing that needs to change is the format we take pictures in. there are more advanced cameras that make vague innacurate 3d model representations; others take the view from different angles and "overlap" them... but all those are not commercially available to the average user, so there's only so much riya can do. On other note, the issue of privacy is very interesting. However this really isn't new. Today's social networks already spread rumors and stuff about people; the new technology will only make it available digitally and easier to sort. So the privacy issues is no the technology itself but the things people already do. I think this will be beneficial because if you're a victim of someone's big mouth that goes out and tells stuff about you (that may not be truth in the first place) this will provide evidence of that and you'll be able to sue them. So while it is infact scary, it does provide additional rousources to protect yourself. 6:17 PM dianne said... Thanks, Miguel..that's insightful. 11:28 AM Chris said... ha! a coworker of mine that i barely know emailed me this morning to say he came across my photo on this post via kottke's site. small world wide web. 3:21 PM Krissi said... That name is so bad though...I mean come on. I had a bad case of "Riya" this weekend. 10:44 AM said... i think this has a chance of being pretty beneficial in investigations. if evidence has a person in the background of a picture (say at a club or something) that could be a suspect or a key witness and they are able to be idenfied by this type of technology, i think that would be greatly beneficial, however again, privacy is an issue. 3:37 PM said... ![]() Hi, I'm Zach. I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated from Wake Forest. After college, I moved to Manhattan to get serious about a company I ran with friends. We sold it to Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp in 2006. I just wrapped up with a project I co-founded called Vimeo and left CV to focus on being a twenty-five year old. I have another blog called Copy and Taste, where I post about learning to cook. I live in Brooklyn now.
