ABC offering shows for free online:
ABC is going to offer online streams of some of its most popular television shows, including "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," for free the day after they first air on broadcast TV. Some analysts said the move has the potential to dramatically impact the way viewers watch TV -- but the key could be whether advertisers are willing to sign up.

This may impact their itunes sales as well. I wonder if this is a good move for them. An idea, allow free downloads of itunes formatted shows with commercials intact.

Adult Swim has been doing this for a while now. Airing all of their in-house production shows and then some out of production ones (like anime shows etc.), and in some cases airing new episodes that haven't even been released on TV yet. Plus there aren't any commercials, so it's a good way to watch shows that you want incase you miss them when they originally air, or if you feel like watching an episode you liked a lot. In ABC's case, I think it's just going to be a lot more oppurtunity for advertising, but I like the idea of where it's going.

ABC might consider starting by first creating shows that are worth watching.

I don't think this will work, the advertisers wont be happy that the viewers can fast forward through adverts. On regular TV you are either forced to watch them or go and put the kettle on.

If I remember correctly last year some advertisers attempted to negotiate lower fees because they felt Tivo was eroding their market reach.

I read somewhere that tivo was thinking about showing advertisments while you fastforward through commercials. Doesnt that contradict the whole idea of skipping through commercials? Ill try and find the article.

Hi, I'm Zach. I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated from Wake Forest. After college, I moved to Manhattan to get serious about a company I ran with friends. We sold it to Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp in 2006. I just wrapped up with a project I co-founded called Vimeo and left CV to focus on being a twenty-five year old.

I have another blog called Copy and Taste, where I post about learning to cook.

I live in Brooklyn now.
