The Straight Story
Did you know that David Lynch once made a Rated-G film? Yeah, The Straight Story and it was distributed by Disney no less, and it's among my favorite films. It's the most beautiful portrait of the Midwest yet. The direction and the photography is inspiring, and altogether readjusts my understanding of Lynch's genius.

It's based on the true story of Alvin Straight, a man too old and broken to drive a car, who rides his lawn-mower from rural Iowa to rural Wisconsin to see his estranged brother who suffered a stroke. Inbetween are simple anecdotes set upon an idyllic landscape.

I haven't seen it, but I thought these notes on wikipedia were interesting:
"The film was shot along the actual route taken by Alvin Straight, and scenes were shot in chronological order. There are also no chapter marks on the DVD release, as David Lynch wanted the film to be watched as a whole."

I've seen this! It is captivating. I think it is a very touching film. Plus, how many times have you seen a guy ride a lawnmower that far?

What makes it even more interesting is it came between Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive...

Who knew Lynch had it in him?

That movie played everyday for 4 months at the movie theatre I worked at in fargo. I probably saw that 70 times. I didn't get it when i was 16 though.

It was marketed as a touching comedy but I mostly thought it was really sad.

Hi, I'm Zach. I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated from Wake Forest. After college, I moved to Manhattan to get serious about a company I ran with friends. We sold it to Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp in 2006. I just wrapped up with a project I co-founded called Vimeo and left CV to focus on being a twenty-five year old.

I have another blog called Copy and Taste, where I post about learning to cook.

I live in Brooklyn now.
