In reply to your Flickr comment: The 30-sec exposure certainly does exaggerate the effect, but even with the auroras this discreet, they're quite noticeable. I had a hunch they'd be out, so I was driving as far from lights as I could get. Once I got out of the city, I glanced out the side window and almost ran off the road! Unfortunately, this is all the brighter they got last night. A few years ago, I remember blues and greens streaking directly overhead, for hours. They fly across the sky, taking about one second for each to make it across, kind of in a wave effect (like this by flickr user rezmutt) That makes for one hell of a photo! Sadly for me, that was before I had begun to tinker with amateur photography, and my point-&-shoot camera didn't capture much.
