iChat makes working offsite easy

I've moved my desk down from the CV offices on the 9th floor to my apartment on the 6th floor. We've run out of space after hiring 3 new employees last week and we're waiting to get a new place for the 30+ of us to work early this Spring.

In a few weeks, I'm moving to my own apartment in Brooklyn, and the Vimeo team and I will work from my old bedroom down here. In the meantime, we're using iChat to video conference when we need to hit each other up for conversation, quick or lengthy. When it works (iChat is surprisingly buggy), it's more efficient than IM or phones, especially when conferencing with a group.

With it's tight hardware/software integration, I predict Apple video-chatting will ease my transition into working offsite seemlessly. Three floors below my team this week, why not San Francisco next week? Finally, 12 years after NetMeeting ...

When you whipped out that camera I felt like I was a model at a photo shoot. Weird how you can get that feeling when you're not even in the same room.

I hope we can work out the iChat bugs, because it really is a good way for us to talk about ideas.

When I was offered the job with Vimeo, one reason I was so excited was exactly because I saw how it would be possible for me to work from anywhere. So cool!

I've used ichat to virtualize myself for years. This has allowed me to spend 6 months of each year traveling. First it was just with audio but now that video has become reliable I'm rarely missed by the folks in the office back home.

Had no idea that you were moving to Brooklyn but that's what happens when you fail to remain up-to-speed with the blogosphere... anyway, welcome to Brooklyn. :)

Hi, I'm Zach. I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated from Wake Forest. After college, I moved to Manhattan to get serious about a company I ran with friends. We sold it to Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp in 2006. I just wrapped up with a project I co-founded called Vimeo and left CV to focus on being a twenty-five year old.

I have another blog called Copy and Taste, where I post about learning to cook.

I live in Brooklyn now.
