OQO Update.

I just read some new first-account experiences with the OQO from reporters at CeBit. I really love the docking setup, its power/size ratio, Blue Tooth and WiFi -- but I too am still not sold on the OQO as a laptop replacement.

Now playing at the Zeitgeist Odeon
Ricky and I made a bet last night regarding Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. Basically, I contend that the movie is going to sweep the summer. With an intial 700 opening screens, I feel the success of the first weekend is going to entice theatres to make room for the film, and bring the total number of screens to at least 2500 by late July, driving ticket sales higher than opening weekend. Ricky contends that the opening weekend wil be the largest and each subsequent week will prove smaller ticket sales. $20 is on the line. Coincidentally, Todd Leopold at CNN debated the same thing in article published today, Now playing at the Zeitgeist Odeon:

Trend-spotters -- particularly annoying pop culture watchers like those of us in the news media -- use the word when something unexpected captures the public fancy in a way that seems symbolic of the times.

Movies don't often capture the zeitgeist. They're put together so long in advance, have so much marketing muscle behind them, that even blockbuster successes can't be said to have become something bigger than they are.

Same spot, 23 years apart

Last time I went home, I sorted through old photo albums and found a picture of my father and a group of guys he went hiking in New Mexico in 1974. In 1997, I had spent two weeks in the same area and posed for a photo in the same exact spot where my father had 23 years previous. It is by far one of my favorite diptychs.

Fort Wayne Pistons
I am a relentless Fort Wayne, Indiana trivia hoarder, mostly because I find my hometown to be so spectaculary bland that any slight deviation becomes completely priceless to me.

So, as I watched the final minutes of what would be the final game of this year's NBA championship game between the Detriot Pistons and the LA Lakers, I waited for the announcer to quip something about the Piston's humble beginnings in Fort Wayne and how they had actually reached the NBA championships as the Fort Wayne Pistons twice, in 1955 and 1956. I glowed with pride.

I was even more excited to see this mentioning in today's New York Post.

SportsEncyclopedia.com had an interesting paragraph: Automobile-piston magnate Fred Zollner launched the club in a the National Basketball League and christened it the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. The Pistons were not the only team named after auto parts in the NBL as they were joined by the Akron Firestone Non-Skids, Akron Goodyear Wingfoots, and Toledo Jim White Chevrolets.

High Speed Rail in Fort Wayne

Very excited to read a report in today's News Sentinel that funding has finally been allocated to research the enviromental impact of a $1.2 billion high-speed rail corridor to connect Cleveland, Fort Wayne and Chicago. This type of study is necessary to determine where the actual tracks should be constructed, and what exactly will be displaced to make room for them. I think an intercity high-speed railroad system in the US is long overdue.

I wonder whether the exponetial growth of our Internet age has prevented earlier development of such a system, since telecommunication has essentially replaced any real demand for more efficient business travel systems.

Either way, fading cities like Fort Wayne will benefit greatly from quick rail connections, because distances to centers like Chicago and Detriot will come closer to being virtual -- if you consider that soon the standard for measuring distance will be in units of pure time. Shrinking route times for commuters and cargo will make a more fertile field for corporate settlement, and put Fort Wayne at a certain advantage, at least until more of the Midwest's rustbelt catchs one. From the article:
The state believes a high-speed train between Chicago, Fort Wayne and Cleveland could generate 1 million passengers by 2015, with 150,000 coming from Fort Wayne alone. Revenues from fares could exceed $55 million in 10 years.

Refreshed.
This morning I told a friend that we had made progress. I told her,
We moved the fridge from the spot where it has stood and sank below the wooden floorboards for too long.
The grease and residue from the traffic of black soles, and the clutter of dust on the lam are all removed. And now, there is just a space where an appliance stood for so long. An institution, really.
