Worms discovered living on whale bones
South Australian Museum via CNN:
The jaw was covered with a "beautiful red carpet" Vrijenhoek recalled. That wasn't surprising because many marine worms are red, he said, but when they got the bones to the surface they knew immediately they were dealing with something totally different.

Fascinating read.

Apple: the 'Microsoft of Music'?
Fast Company Now:
Milunovich says the 0.5GB of memory for songs of Motorola music phones is a different market from the 4GB iPod mini or 20GB and 40GB fourth-generation iPods. "Getting users to try iTunes on their cell phones introduces them to portable music the Apple way," he says.

As a result of the alliance, from early next year Motorola phone users will be able to transfer music from iTunes to a new mobile version of the software on the phone. Music, including paid-for downloads from the iTunes music store, will be transferred via USB or Bluetooth, and the mobile player will be the standard music application on all Motorola's phones.

Fireworks

Chris just sent me a few photos from our rooftop Fourth of July party. The photos are neat, but they give no impression of the entire horizon. From the top of Tiffany's building, on the 30th floor, we could look up and down the east river and see five sychronized displays rocketing upwards. A very memorable holiday, and especially moving to spend in New York.

Weekend Wedding

Back from Fort Wayne for the weekend -- Kevin and Amy's wedding was wonderful, and the closing line of my best man's toast earned unexpected laughs.

Being back New York is unusual, still feels strange calling it home. But at least I can run down to the corner grocery right now and get a grilled cheese sandwich, and walk around a few blocks to stew over a bad taxi experience I had coming back from Laguardia. $44 cab fare when it should have cost $30. I knew he was screwing me with a circumnventing route -- but I didn't know the exact details of the correct route to challenge him. You live, you learn, you piss and moan.

Name Drop Double Take!
We just learned that Jay-Z tried to buy the penthouse of our building in 2002, but other tenants sabotaged the deal. From CNN Showbuzz:
Rap star Jay-Z pulled out of buying a $6.5 million penthouse in Manhattan's Tribeca section, and the owner has sued two neighbors for sabotaging the deal.
Advertising executive Peter Arnell charged in a lawsuit that tenants Lynn Fisher-Hill and Lewis Taffer hung notices in the halls and elevators of the Hudson Street condominium that referred to Jay-Z's 'criminal record and his lifestyle of knives, guns and violence.'

Taffer and Fisher-Hill also posted newspaper articles, including one of Jay-Z pleading guilty last year to stabbing a man in December 1999 in a dispute over bootlegged music, according to the lawsuit. The rapper, whose real name is Shawn Carter, was placed on three years probation as part of the plea deal.

Jay-Z pulled out of the penthouse deal before any money was exchanged and a contract was signed. He gave no reason for not going through with the purchase. There was no comment Tuesday from Taffer, Fisher-Hill and Jay-Z on the lawsuit, which was filed May 9 in state Supreme Court in Manhattan.

Peter Arnell's Arnell Group has done ad campaigns for DKNY and Tommy Hilfiger. He and his wife, Sara, put the penthouse up for sale last year after buying music mogul Tommy Mottola's Westchester mansion.

Oh, and Duncan Sheik lives upstairs.

Ernst Road crash kills teen-agers
Two of my sister's classmates were killed in a car crash on Ernst road in Fort Wayne this past weekend. I just read this article in the Journal Gazette and became quite agitated. I always get incensed when I read car crash reports involving teens, mostly because the kids always have first part-time jobs and the reporter always interviews that kid's manager or his non-descript co-worker. And of course the kid has only been working there for 3 months, for 3 hours a day after school, doing a menial task, so there is nothing really substantial of the kid's character to witness. In this case, one of the boy's co-workers said, He was always pretty positive and seemed to be a good kid ... Everybody seemed to like him.

So it seemed.

I remember reading one a few months ago about a girl who was struck by a drunk driver. The only quote in the article was given by her manager at Applebee's who attested, She was punctual and easy to get along with -- as though those qualities validate her death as a tragedy. What about her brother, aunt, school teacher, or best friend?

I just really miss compassion, but perhaps it's too invasive.
