To celebrate the 100th Birthday of the NYC Subway, I joined a bunch of good people (including Jason Kottke and Eliot Shepard) to recreate an early 20th century tea party inside a vintage subway car that was running on the NRW lines today. The party became most amusing when we stopped at major stations like Times Square and 34th Street -- and bypassers would unknowingly dazzle us with their bewildered looks. Also, I am now addicted to cucumber sandwiches. See some snaps I took. Unsilent Night Recap
We attended Phil Kline's Unsilent Night demonstration last night. It was a spectacular. The starting point was the arch in Washington Square park. At least 500 people had gathered with a third as many boomboxes. Phil distributed tapes to everyone with a player. Promptly at 7pm, he directly everyone to press play at the same time. It was a symphony of ambient music. Each tape was different, unique with a different arrangement of sounds. It was predominantly chimes and bells -- like a cathedral sounding off on a holy day. But more angelic and harmonious. We then starting marching in a loose column, much like locusts (the good kind of locusts) headed towards Thompkins park. We clobbered our way through traffic -- we stopped Broadway and 1st Ave for a good 5-10 minutes each. Drivers were not amused. They added to our choir with a cacophony of horns. On some streets, near St Marks for example, our mass took over the entire street. Shopkeepers rushed to their windows to see what was going on, and people in their apartments above leaned out their windows and cheered us on. We ended in Thompkins park and formed a circular gathering and stood listening until the last tape had stopped playing. Then as quickly as we had come together, we dispersed and went about our own ways.
Giving Candy to Strangers.
I spent the day in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with Youngna Park. We devised a photo-adventure that consumed our afternoon: Trade candy canes to strangers for their portrait. After hours of wrangling people and making random friendships, we succeeded in capturing the faces of many interesting folks. Youngna and I shot independently, with distinctively different angles. Hers will be online very soon, but in the meantime you may view my portraitures here. Quitting the Paint Factory

Finally, I found an Olivetti Valentine typewriter. The clerk was semi-appalled when he learned that I intend to actually use it. Google Search: Unsilent Night.
Unsilent Night is apparently celebrated in many places -- not just New York.

The Junior Boys were a good time last night. And it was my first show at Joe's Pub.
Really enjoyed Ted Leo at the Bowery Ballroom.
Holiday Party
![]() We hosted a party this past Saturday to celebrate the season and friendship. The jazz band played until 3am, and then Dalas deejayed until we closed down at 5am. It was a motley of elegance and revelry. You can see the invitation I made here. Photo above courtesy of the kind Youngna. FilmFakers. Every Wednesday Night 10PM on AMC.
Film Fakers was SO good last night. You can watch the full episode online.

THIS IS GREAT!
Big day for us here in Busted Tees land. Today, I Gave My Word became our first shirt to be carried by a national retailer, in this case Urban Outfitters. They even have it up on their site.

Today I refound a nostalgic music gem -- Supersonic Rock and Roll Star by Onionhead, a Fort Wayne band. It was first released by a local alternrock radio station (96.3, The Edge) on a 'best of Fort Wayne' compilation. The track was part of an era of local music that included Abraham (now known at Jettingham) and Skavossas -- that sparked my love for live music. It is hard to believe this song is nearly 10 years old -- but you can download it now and still enjoy it today.
Happy Birthday, Nick.

A new way of traffic engineering
Use minimal signage and make all traffic (foot, car, bike, etc.) use the same roadway? The result is that all traffic slows down and relies on communication between participants to negotiate the traffic space. via Kottke.
Night Off
After work today, my roommates happily settled into "Night Off". The first in many moons. No schedule, no meetings, ordered pizza in, etc. Ricky and Josh collapsed into the couch and L-O-Led to Sex and The City, and Laguna Beach (real, not scripted) all night. I put on pajamas at 9pm and wrote long, overdue emails in bed. Jake is MIA. He will probably come back though.

![]() I share my bathroom with the public, because it is the closest to the front of the apartment. So, to make for a more comfy WC for friends and me, I added a small library and periodical section to encourage reading/sharing.
Still sore this morning from botching Lisa Loeb's Stay last night at a karaoke bar.

![]() Construction-Next-Door Update: It is hard to tell from this photo, but they have DUG deep. I am guessing 40-50 feet down. I will take a street-level shot outside when it stops raining. Its not so noisy anymore -- all they do is pick up dirt and take it away. Hopefully things get exciting soon. Tree.
It is up. We need to decorate it. This should be interesting.
Our first Christmas Tree in Manhattan!
We got a tree tonight, from a street vendor on the corner of Leonard and West Broadway. Such holiday cheer in the city: carrying a beautiful, sweet-smelling fur through downtown, past taxis and street-going strangers, while singing carols off-key.
PS. Photos below. I switched back to carrying my portable Canon s200 around for chance photoblogging opps, but as I learned from tonight, the quality of my camera in lowlight conditions has deteriorated. Enjoy, nonetheless.

Night in Gotham
Just waking up, much too hungover.
Last night was fantastic. It was a true throwback to the 20's -- a time period I feel much more comfortable living in. Gotham Hall was very impressive. It resembles Rome's Pantheon, complete with marble columns and towering domed ceiling. Completely manicured. The night was designed as an elaborate game of Clue. Upon arriving you received a cryptic looking card. There were three broad categories for these cards: Who, What, and Where. By mixing with people and meeting planted actors, you could gain and swap cards until you had a mystery solved! After 30 min or so, everyone seemed to have forgotten about the game, and directed their attention to the open bar and deserts. An opera singer accompanied by a pianist dazzled us. I was extremely caught by her performance of "Oh, Holy Night". It was an overwhelmingly classy time. Can't wait to do it again. The only pics I have access to are the from my camera, which we were casually snapping as we were getting ready. I hope to get more from the actual masquerade soon. Breeze
Patrick invited me into my first Macromedia Breeze meeting today. VERY smooth. Intuitive. Succesful.
Excited about ...

![]() Hi, I'm Zach. I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated from Wake Forest. After college, I moved to Manhattan to get serious about a company I ran with friends. We sold it to Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp in 2006. I just wrapped up with a project I co-founded called Vimeo and left CV to focus on being a twenty-five year old. I have another blog called Copy and Taste, where I post about learning to cook. I live in Brooklyn now.
