Vimeo
Jakob and I will be presenting Vimeo, a site we made together in our spare time, tomorrow night at the New York Tech Meetup. Please join us!

Vimeo is a site for organizing and sharing personal video clips. You can assemble any variety of clips together to make Automatic Movies. For instance, here is an Automatic Movie about funny things. Our system gathers all clips which users have tagged as funny, and plays them for you. This one shows all clips I have shared. Additionally, Nick uploaded some great clips from his recent travels to India.

We are presently in closed beta, so you can't add your own clips yet. During this time we are just working out the kinks. Play with it for a bit, and let me know what you think and experience.

P.S. Vimeo was a Yahoo! New and Notable site today!

Snowboarding
It has been nearly three months since I left the city. But yesterday, finally, I snapped my city-seclusion streak and rented a car with my pal Paul and a gang of his friends to go snowboarding on Hunter Mountain. I had a great time; my entire body is sore with the good kind of aching that reminds you that you just had a complete workout. I lament that it was my first time out this season. Hopefully there are a few more weeks left of decent slope conditions to make further daytrips possible. Anyone else in?

I posted a two minute clip that Paul captured featuring a few of us riding down a pass. It is unedited, perhaps a bit boring, but interesting to some nonetheless.

Stuffed Robots

My friends Jessie, Bill, and Patrick just launched a retail website for their new venture Stuffed Robots. It is by far the most creative student startup I have seen in awhile.

The three are college freshmen. Bill and Jess are art students at Wake Forest, and Patrick studies new media at RIT -- and all are surely on track to own the stuffed robot empire.

I placed an order for the blue one.

A girl I knew.
Probably for every man is one city that sooner or later turns into a girl.

I just read J.D. Salinger's short story, A girl I knew. It broke my heart.

In my limited traveling, I too have had relationships that subsisted only on 12-word shared vocabularies, and attractions that are unexplainable save for the warm, fond static you feel for someone after a few moments of quiet observation.

I sympathize with Salinger. I envy his love for her, and desperately wish this boy-meets-girl story wasn't his true tragedy.

Party Crash
The guys and I were at Odea last night, mooching free glasses of merlot at Nerve's Bordeaux wine-tasting party. Nikola Tamindzic was there snapping party shots, and this afternoon I wound up on Gawker looking like a space cadet. But look at his other shots. Simply fantastic.

Jakob was interviewed on Rocketboom about Vimeo, a website he invented and we made together.

I especially enjoyed the scene when some unexplainable gravity pulls Jakob out the door during the Q and A.

Mellowdrone is a rarity in that his music is incredible and is decent enough to make all of it available free to download. The EPs are right here. *Pretty Boy and Bonemarrow are my favs.

Independent Music Awards
Upon hearing that Sufjan Stevens had suddenly joined the Independent Music Awards lineup, I rushed to get tickets last night. The show was stacked with the likes of RJD2, Aesop Rock, and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I left most impressed with Saul Williams, whose track Coded Language knocked me off my feet.

Sufjan only played two songs. And, although he was poignant, the crowd chattered through his set and was sadly not interested in his ballad offerings. I still sang along, and I even remembered to take a picture.

Corporate Culture
The Gore Company (makers of Gore-Tex) have a really neat corporate culture. Some of the more interesting points include:
Associates (not employees) are hired for general work areas. With the guidance of their sponsors (not bosses) and a growing understanding of opportunities and team objectives, associates commit to projects that match their skills.

No more than 150 work in any one location. (They spread 6,000 associates amongst 45 places around the world).

There are no chains of command nor pre-determined channels of communication. Instead, they communicate directly with each other and are accountable to fellow members of our multi-disciplined teams.

I don't want to get in the habit of mentioning things like this, but I really can get enough. Apparently the rabbit, named Oolong, can balance more than pancakes on his head. The Internet is sooo funny.

Auditions make 'Idol' a joke
Friend Chris Wylde appeared on American Idol last night. He rapped his way into the last round of auditions before being cut -- and his trial appeared on television last night! The clip is hilarious.

Now Andy Dehnart at MSNBC is wondering how Chris, a professional comedian, overacted his way through the auditions. Long article here.

The Arcade Fire
I have been waiting since last September, and finally I saw The Arcade Fire last night at Webster Hall. I even toted my cumbersome camerabag along for what I expected to be a great night of shooting -- and it should have been! -- but unfortunately I didn't realize until too late that the body of my camera wasn't inside my bag. :( I was stuck lugging around my lens all night.

I didn't get any pics, but others did.

I really enjoyed myself. Singing outloud in unison with everyone else at a show never seemed as fun. The Arcade Fire's music is conducive for spontaneous audience choirs with their vareity of soprano "Wooo wooo's" and "Ahhhh ahhhh's". I was also very impressed with the openers Man Man and Final Fantasy. I am desperately seeking the latter's EP, but I can't find much about him online. Any leads would be appreciated.

The music was great, but really, the only thing I can't stop thinking about is Webster Hall's light kit. They provided the most visually arresting display and are unlike any other stage lights I have ever seen. I am wondering whether they are proprietary, because I would like to find their source and perhaps get a set for our living room. I would never leave the house. Again, any details would be helpful.
