Nicaragua

Tomorrow I am leaving for Managua via San Jose, Costa Rica. My friend Paul will be waiting at the airport with an old car he rented, and we'll drive to San Juan del Sur to meet a group of surfers and photographers. From there, we will continue down the Pacific coast to an unnamed beach to spend six days.

For the group, this is a surfing trip. For me, because I have never surfed, the obvious purpose is the photographic opportunity (although, I intend to get surfing lessons from the pros, as well).

Paul and I are camping on the beach, outside the group's bungalow. To make room for camera equipment, I'm packing light and taking only a couple of tshirts, shorts and a hoodie amongst other trinkets of survival like iodine, bandaids, deet, and a flashlight.

I have never been south of Miami and know only a few words of Spanish; The cultural experience will be unprecedented. I am wholly prepared to be a respectful and quietly observing gringo; to eat lots of rice, beans and corn totillas; and to drink plenty of Tona, a Nicaraguan beer, which I hear is the best in Central America. Otherwise, I'll be taking plenty of pictures, and will be sure to share them when I get back on the 3rd.

PS. Experienced advice is appreciated.

WTF? Indiana senator Evan Bayh has a flickr account and lists me as a contact?

He must not realize my ultimate plans to stage a coup and remove him, the governor and the legislature from leadership. Maybe he's keeping enemies close?

Evan, some advice: Keep pictures like this far from the public domain.

I am back in New York.

Over the weekend, in Fort Wayne, I celebrated and/or observed two coming-of-age pageants with my sister Taylor.

1. She turned 16, despite my protests with Old Father Time and Mother Nature. I wrote formal letters to both, asking them kindly, but firmly, to reconsider her annual increase of age and instead have her ratcheted back one to 14. I received no reply.

2. As a sophomore, she attended her first Prom. She was asked by a junior named "Nick". While waiting for her date to arrive, I told her that I would like to preemptively cut off his arms before the dance to prevent any misbehavior. She became upset by the idea and pleaded with me not to do anything like that. So, I didn't cut off his arms.

Needless to say, both events were hard for me! I have only begun to realize how much I regret being away from home while she and my younger brother grow up. These emotions underscore my own confused feelings of getting older and accepting some loss of innocence and irresponsibility.

Pensiveness aside, I had a fun weekend. My shoulders and neck are burnt from playing baseball with my brother Noel on Saturday. It was unusually hot -- so much so that he continuously urged me hit every pitch into the pond so that he would have a reason to dive in, cool off and take a break. It excited me to see him walk around all weekend (and even dive for baseballs!) without his crutches. His walking is improving so well.

My mom made two killer homecooked meals, complete with corn on the cobb and rhubarb pie -- making me ever so aware of what I just can't get at restaurants in New York. And my dad sent me off with a dozen vinyl records from his collection, which he recently refound in the attic -- I'm looking forward to listening to the Tommy James and the Led Zeppelin albums most.

The weekend outfitted me well. I am refreshed, as though I just swabbed myself down with one of those 'clean wipes' they give you when you order chicken wings -- which afterwards make you smell lemony and feel a bit tingly too.

My Year in Tags.

I left college one year ago today, and since have moved to San Diego and finally to New York where I've been for 10 months. So much has changed!

My friend Kara Canal recently posted a picture of her Flickr Tag Cloud with the comment, "Flickr is a Barometer." This caused me to consider how incredibly true this might be! I tend to photograph both the interesting and mundane minutia in my life, and my tag cloud reflects nicely.

It's really fun to look at.

Let's make a list. Leave a comment with the top 5 tags from your Flickr Cloud. Be sure to include a link to your full cloud, as well.

On the Beach With Dave Chappelle:
The first thing Chappelle wants is to dispel rumors—that he's got a drug problem ... The picture he paints—and it seems a fairly honest and frank assessment— is of someone struggling to come to terms with a new position and power who's still figuring out how to come to grips with how people around him are reacting to the $50 million deal he signed last year with Comedy Central.

Back to school
My FIT summer schedule came in the mail today. Starting June, I am taking a night class every Tuesday and Thursday. The course is just a basic 'intro' prerequisite that I need to take before anything else! My hope is to be influenced by nice New York fashion kids, and learn some new words and concepts that will help me grow our clothing (tshirt) businesses. I am excited about Defunker for its potential to move beyond tshirts, and I am eager to meet people at FIT who might inspire ideas.

Up late.
I am on a marathon... Kunal and I are camping in our 3rd Floor office until we finish a certain company project. This way, we expect to finish a one-month project in 8 days. It's like exam week, complete with the stress, urgency, and late-night smoothie runs. No joke, I am really excited for this.

I'll take some pictures once we unroll the sleeping bags, or once Kunal falls asleep at his desk -- whichever comes first.

PS. We both appreciate notes of encouragement, and cupcakes.

Last night I saw Mike Doughty, formerly of Soul Coughing, at the Bowery Ballroom. I was excited to finally hear True Dreams of Wichita performed live, but the neatest moment of the night was when Mike asked everyone to hold up their cellphone so that he could take a picture. I wish I had my camera with me because the resulting scene proved to be incredible, if not a little bit scary, as hundreds of glowing blue-screen devices shined above the crowd. He posted a few of the pictures online (if only he had had a tripod). You can see me just right of center in a few of the pictures, with a blue sleeve holding a Sidekick.

Sigur Rós Acoustic Cover
Bill forwarded me an acoustic cover of Sigur Rós' Untitled #4 (a.k.a. the nothing song) by another Wake Forest student who goes by Bristopher Crowder. It's pretty good. I like to play to it immediately after listening to the orginal, which you can also download for free.
