I'm thinking that with the popularity of Curbed that there might also be a demand for 'renovation blogs' in New York. Perhaps I was shortsighted to use a Yahoo group to deliver updates to those interested -- I'm thinking now that I should convert our construction notes into posts for USA's own diary.(My inspiration is Barcade's visual tour of their construction). My Fort Wayne heirloom
![]() I bought a truck for the space. Not just any truck, but a 1970 International Harvester Scout built in Fort Wayne. The Scout was one of the first civilian American off-road SUVs. It was made with the ability to remove the cab, windows, roof, and the windshield. I've dreamt of owning one since the day I turned 16. The International Harvester plant operated in Fort Wayne for 50 years before closing in 1982 amid a declining agriculture economy (IH earned its reputation for farm equipment). They were a backbone to the city's industrial complex, employing 10,000 workers. When they produced their final scout (pictured above) and closed their doors for good, Fort Wayne was slammed. The slack was eventually picked up 3 years later by GM who built a truck assembly plant on the other side of town, close to the suburb I grew up in. Still, 20 years later, residents talk of 'International' with bitterness, and pride, like the deeds of a deceased family member whose ghost haunts them. Me, well, I'm just excited that my hometown contributed so much to Americana. Yeah yeah yeah, I realize it's a gas-guzzler, but damn it's cool. Labels: Fort Wayne New Screen Resolution Paradigm
CNN redesigned their homepage. I'm a sucker for grayscale. The important thing to note is that they switched their design width from 800 pixels wide to 1024 pixels, making it the most visited English website (#12 by Alexa) to adopt this larger size format. It's encouraging for me because my development team just decided to make CollegeHumor's newest project 1024-based as well, after our percentage of users with 800x600 screens recently dropped below 10%.

Facebook for $2 Billion?
20060327
Rafat Ali follows up: The non-story about college social networking site Facebook's being on the block, which it has been for a while and everyone, including Viacom, has looked at it multiple times, parsed the valuation and options, and still could not think of a logical business reason for ponying up that kind of money. So does Valleywag: BusinessWeek writer Steve Rosenbush is the latest sipper of the Facebook Kool-Aid, putting a positive spin on its "sell for $2 billion" plan in his latest article. (Tuesday morning drinking game: take a shot every time he follows a doubt with a "but" -- as in, "Facebook doesn't match the scale of MySpace, but...") My sources tell me that the latest round of financing was closed on a valuation of $2 Billion -- so that's where the number comes from.

![]() I received a 'secret invitation' to register for Riya's Beta release. After I signed up, I sent the URL to some friends to see if it worked for them too. It did. So, I'm thinking it might work for you, as well, and maybe that's exactly what they want. Anyway, let's try it out. Register here. Riya, most simply, is Flickr + face recognition. You upload photos and tag peoples' faces. Over time, Riya learns and knows who a person is, without you having to tag them. What an exciting and scaring future this is! Just think about all those times you've stood in the background of a stranger's photo. The photographer won't know who you are, but Riya will! You can't escape the recognition engine, either, unless you avoid photos altogether. Anytime you pose willingly for a friend, they're going to tag you, and Riya's gonna learn.
V For Vendetta is amazing. It's been an hour since I left the theater and I am still laughing to myself in manic fits, in sheer disbelief of how good it was.

Cool, Nick!
Etiquettes go missing in missed calls: My buddy Nick was quoted in India's Financial Express. In India ‘missed calls’ were very popular, as a way to say, “I’m thinking about you” or “call me back.” I would often hear someone say, “I’ll send you a missed call when we get there - see you soon.”" Buffalo '66
![]() I am not sure how I missed it in 1998, but I just watched Vincent Gallo's Buffalo '66 last night. After Jeff realized that I'm originally from Buffalo, and also a Bills fan, he asked me whether I had ever seen the film, about the guy who went to prison because of a bad bet he made on the Buffalo Bills in Superbowl XXV? I threw my hands in the air. "No! There's a movie about that?" I lived in Buffalo before moving to Indiana when I was 11. Almost all of my extended family still lives in or around there. ANYWAY. Billy Brown (Gallo) gets parole after 5 years and sets out to kill Scott Wood (based on the actual placekicker, Scott Norwood, who also inspired the character Ray Finkle in Ace Ventura. Laces Out!). Wood missed the game-winning fieldgoal, causing Brown to lose a bet that ultimately lands him in prison. He wants revenge. But! First, he must visit his parents, whom he has excused his absence with a story about going away for a long time to work for the government. They were also made to believe he had been married while away. Burdened with parents expecting to meet his wife, Brown kidnaps Layla (Christina Ricci) and coerces her to play his spouse. A dark, genius comedy unfolds. I recommend it. Aside, I learned that mentioning Vincent Gallo causes a stir with some people. I know nothing about him, other than that Jakob vehemently dislikes him. In an old office space we once rented there hung a canvas featuring a grid of pasted portraits. Mostly people I didn't recognize, except for Philip Seymour Hoffman. Apparently, Gallo was one of them, too ... When we would take breaks from working late nights, Jakob and I would sometimes meander in the hallway near the canvas, and you could always depend on Jake to point Gallo out and say something blunt like, "I hate that guy." Jake doesn't hate too many people, so you'd think that Gallo had done something awful to him. I now know that he had recently seen Brown Bunny and its infamous blowjob scene with Chloë Sevigny. Jake thought it had been immense waste of his time. So much so that he still holds a grudge. The thing is that Jake isn't alone. Many people are bothered by his self-indulgent and antagonistic personality. I only mention all of this to make a point that I don't have an opinion. I've only seen Buffalo '66, and I thought his direction was impressive. Jeff, however, is quick to point to Gallo's arrogance with an anecdote: Once, before Buffalo '66 was premiered, Gallo was quoted saying the film would be the greatest directorial debut since Orson Welle's Citizen Kane. Let me know what you think. Buffalo '66 Links: Netflix Amazon IMDB Mailing List

Space Saturday
![]() Great day today! We finished the loft and stairs -- and we thought it would take all weekend. Many thank yous to everyone who showed up to help, like our dads and Pete, Chris, Kunal, Darrel, Kristin, Vicky, Jessica, Noah and Carly. Tomorrow we are going back to install new electrical sockets and light fixtures, spackle holes in the bathroom, and start building the climbing wall. Things we need: Fridge, furniture and floor lamps! Aside: The people in our immediate neighborhood are welcoming, and seem excited that we're joining the block. More than a handful of people swung by to say hello and introduce themselves. Currently 72˚
We made it through another winter.
Space Update
![]() This weekend we will start and finish our first major renovation project at the space (still unnamed, make a suggestion if you have one). We're building a loft 8 feet tall, 20 feet long and 6 feet deep to create floor space above what will be the main equipment area housing the kiln and tablesaw. We will also build a staircase. After I first blogged about our space, the outpour of interest was overwhelming. We were caught off guard! At the time, Paul, Jake and I didn't have anything specific to tell everyone because we were still working out the logistics of how and when to begin renovation, as well as make a calendar to start collecting dates for people interested in using the space for their projects and events. We are making an interactive website for the space that will allow the public to claim open dates to the use the space. In the meantime, we encourage anyone interested in using the space later to help us fix it up now. Besides the loft construction, we will also be painting this weekend and could use your help. We will be at space almost every hour of the weekend, starting tonight after dinner. If you do decide to come, swing by on Saturday morning and bring a hammer if you want to help with the loft, or a mask and an extended paint roller if you want to paint. Either way, just show up and there will be something meaningful for you to do. Or, just come to hang out. That's cool, too. I posted the address and links to maps on our temporary site universalspaceagency.com. From Manhattan, take the L to Bedford Ave. Use a map to get you from there. If you have any questions, or get lost, call me at 206-356-9237. Also, it would be great if everyone brought snacks or drinks to keep our worker buffet stocked. Thanks ahead of time! PS. My dad is coming in from Fort Wayne to help, as is Paul's from Fort Lauderdale. They're both good guys to know. Come meet them, at least. Labels: Fort Wayne

They're stories that take place on the edge of civilization, just out of sight. Chris thought I would like Act One: Brooklyn Archipelago. Out for a simple pleasure cruise with two friends, Alex Zharov was planning to see Jamaica Bay in New York City. But this end-of-the-day excursion, which should have only lasted 40 minutes, turns into an out of control adventure that will leave him lost, stranded, and bleeding ... all within sight of the Empire State Building. What are the chances that one of my favorite bands would cover my favorite worst song!? In case you wondered, too, they're very very good. The Spinto Band played Kiss From a Rose live on BBC Radio. My friend Jeff was ready to record it as it happened, so you can download it here.

![]() Artist's rendition of the indoor beach. I received an unsolicited phonecall from a man representing KemQuest Ventures, Inc. I am not sure how he got my number, but he was calling to drum up investment interest to create and design, a world-class, one-hundred-twenty-million dollar, domed, futuristic, interactive, indoor city with a Polynesian theme including: a beach and water park, entertainment complex, hotel, spa, and an aquarium. I'm not sure if this is legit. I requested an executive summary because I was interested, but mostly in order to get him off the phone. He emailed it to me soon after: Our Beach Pavilion, situated in a massive dome, will consist of a record breaking four acre indoor beach with a man-made realistic shoreline and boardwalk Our Water Kingdom Pavilion will consist of an assortment of rides designed to get patrons wet.Designed as an area to allow guests to warm up, dry off, and relax, Our Hospitality Pavilion is to include a public sun room with specially designed state of the art heating elements in its ceiling structure for warmth, comfort, and reduced dry-off time. Our Spa Pavilion is designed as an escape from the stimulation and adrenaline rush of the rest of the complex. Drawing on the five elements of Chinese philosophy, and other ancient Asian traditions that date back centuries, the Spa Pavilion aims for total body rejuvenation. Our Entertainment World Pavilion will encompass everything from a virtual reality theater and video arcade, to a musical comedy theater, rainforest jungle-gym, and underground caverns. Our food pavilion will consist of a variety of American and foreign fare. The pavilion will include both kosher and non-kosher cuisine, buffets, fine dining, fast food restaurants, Italian dessert cafes, "outdoor" seating, and dinner shows. Our aquarium will house many exotic fish, a touch and feed arena, a water ride that takes visitors into the "deep sea", and an aquatic museum. The Polynesian style hotel will house the resort portion of the complex. The Hotel itself will include a ballroom, eateries, wedding chapels, and its own water ride. Our parking garage will be a multi-level indoor parking facility to accommodate all guests from the aquarium, hotel, theatre, and water park complex. The garage will house three thousand vehicles at full capacity. To cap it all off, it's proposed to be built near the Woodstock site.

![]() Eric, Me, Ben, Jeff and Alex (Missing: Dave, Stefan, & Margot). This past weekend, my friends Jeff and Margot hosted me at Vail. I was lucky to have the chance to get out West one more time before the early spring makes snowboarding impossible until Decemeber. The bonus was that I met a bunch more of their pals, whom, after three days, I naturally adopted as my own. I enjoyed them as much I as the mountain (The mountain, by the way, is big and breathtaking and challenging, and ultimately, a total playground). I left Vail with a new understanding of two concepts: 1. Jumping (though I wasn't able to land a simple 180). 2. Après-ski, via Jeff. It's the tradition of finishing your last run at the patio of a slope-side bar, and relaxing with a beer and, to my recommendation, french fries cooked in truffle oil at the Larkspur Restaurant. Now, I hope I can squeeze one more snowy weekend out of Hunter (maybe Vermont?) so that I don't have to wait a year to get those 180s down.

Take a look at Zillow.com - they went out and got really hard to find data which they organized and made easily searchable with a great map interface. Cool. But then they forgot the second step it seems - MAKE MONEY from that value. Why in god’s name I don’t have to give them my credit card or something to see this data which can’t be found anywhere else, I have no idea.via Ricky.
