My first Burn

I am leaving for Burning Man tomorrow tonight -- flying to Sacramento where my friends Jeff and Margot are picking me up before we all drive to Nevada together. Jakob is coming too.

Anyone else going? Let me know ...

The Straight Story
Did you know that David Lynch once made a Rated-G film? Yeah, The Straight Story and it was distributed by Disney no less, and it's among my favorite films. It's the most beautiful portrait of the Midwest yet. The direction and the photography is inspiring, and altogether readjusts my understanding of Lynch's genius.

It's based on the true story of Alvin Straight, a man too old and broken to drive a car, who rides his lawn-mower from rural Iowa to rural Wisconsin to see his estranged brother who suffered a stroke. Inbetween are simple anecdotes set upon an idyllic landscape.

Notes from Life at Connected Ventures
Tonight we're having a company party at a tacky ethnic restaurant to celebrate the IAC deal. An hour ago, I called our contact there to confirm that there would be music. He replied, "Top 40, obviously".

Excited by the news, we turned the dial to Third Eye Blind and turned the speakers loud. A dance party erupted and in the excitement, Jakob grabbed Ricky's prized Shaq cardboard standup and began to thrash it into a group of us dancers. At this moment, Ricky walked in and saw Shaq ripped and slumped on the floor. Jake immediately blamed Shaq, and then the group of us. BUT, unbeknownst to any of us, Kunal had recorded the entire scene and THIS CLIP SURFACED!

Now, Ricky has taken something prized by Jakob and locked it in his safe until Jakob finds him a new Shaq standup. THE DRAMA IS OVERWHELMING.

Connected Ventures + IAC
My partners and I are proud to finally announce that we have sold a majority stake in our company to Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp, which spun off Expedia last year and currently owns TicketMaster, Bloglines, Ask, Evite, Match, and many successful others.

Having grown CV from a startup to a sustainable business, we're now curious just how far we can take this. Admittedly, only a couple of years out of school, we knew we couldn't do it alone, and are excited to have been matched with Mr. Diller and the talent he has assembled on his end -- people like Michael Jackson, their president of programming, once the executive at BBC responsible for Da Ali G Show and Trading Spaces, who most recently chiefed USA Networks.

Friends have asked me whether we are moving -- nope, we're staying in the same spot, just a few floors above our apartment. Little else is changing. We still don't have to dress up for work, but now our kitchen cabinents are filled with snacks. Best of both worlds, really.

Oh, and I guess you can technically buy stock in us now, since we're part-owned by a public company. Point your broker to ticker IACI.

Finally, I thank those, especially my best friends and family, who have advised and encouraged me so thoughtfully over the past few years. And, most importantly, thank you Jakob, Josh and Ricky for inviting me into our partnership and this opportunity. We did good.

Banksy in Brooklyn
The other night I saw this graffiti on North 6th in Williamsburg and recognized it as the work of Bansky, but I doubted myself after considering that it could have been a copycat.

But, Jake Dobkin over at Gothamist can't be fooled -- he's a grafitti nut and he confirmed its authenticity.

I would a enjoy world the more if its graffiti looked more like Banksy's.

Windows Live Writer is pretty good! There, I said it.

It's a desktop app that let's you create and post entries to any of your blogs, using any service. I like using the "Website Preview' mode which shows you what your entry will look like on your site as you type it out.

The Puffy Chair
Last night I saw The Puffy Chair at the Angelika. It's a bizarre roadtrip romantic comedy about a New Yorker ex-indie rocker who takes his girlfriend and brother on a circuit to pickup a chair he bought on eBay for his dad's birthday.

It was particularly entertaining because the dialogue was overwhelmingly idiosyncratic to this time and place in my life. Plus, I was crushing hard on Katie Aselton from the start.

So, highly recommended. Here's a list of release dates.

Maine
I went to Maine (now on my roster of places to live) with my sister Taylor this weekend. We met in Portland on Friday and then meandered north along the coast in our rental car stopping ever so often to photograph a lighthouse or lay on a beach. Then, this morning we reached Saint George, where I dropped her off at Outward Bound's Coastal Sailing Program. For the next 16 days she'll be sailing a ketch with 9 other people. So, that's really cool, and I am proud of her for doing it -- It's some beautiful, rugged adventure at its best.

I took a few pictures ... can't wait to see hers.

Kottke sent me a link to Fort Wayne news story he saw on Yahoo...

Teen crashes into tree full of bees
A teenage driver crashed into a hollow tree and stirred up tens of thousands of angry honey bees, creating a swarm that sent her and nine others to the hospital.
Like I told him, it's not exactly the kind of Fort Wayne headline I like to see in national news, but we'll take what we can get!
