I upgraded Hype Machine to the Frequented list on my right sidebar. It's a MP3 blog aggregator, and for the past 4 months has been my primary source of new music.

Finally!
JetBlue is now offering service from JFK to Chicago's O'Hare. Apparently you can book fares for $36 each way if you buy within the next 36 hours.

Dawkins is so hot right now!
Richard Dawkins Tour Journal:
Last night in Lynchburg, Virginia, home of the infamous Jerry Falwell, was memorable. The large hall at Randolph Macon Woman’s College was packed. I gave a fairly short program of readings from The God Delusion, and then the bulk of the evening was given over to much more than an hour of Q & A. The first questioner announced himself as coming from Liberty (Falwell’s 'University'), and he began by saying he had never been so insulted, yet simultaneously so amused, by any lecture. Many of the questioners announced themselves as either students or faculty from Liberty, rather than from Randolph Macon which was my host institution. One by one they tried to trip me up, and one by one their failure to do so was applauded by the audience. Finally, I said that my advice to all Liberty students was to resign immediately and apply to a proper university instead. That received thunderous applause, so that I almost began to feel slightly sorry for the Liberty people. Only almost and only slightly, however.

Life/Work Balance
Reformed venture capitalist Brad Feld:
My work – which used to overwhelm everything else I did – is still a central part of my life. However, it is no longer my singular focus, nor is it the most important thing to me anymore. The balance that I’ve discovered has helped me understand the value of other things, which has made my work and – more importantly – my life - much more rewarding.
Countering, Fast Company says balance is bunk:
Sigmund Freud suggested it first: Imbalance is part of the human condition. The father of psychoanalysis observed that anxiety is a crucial "signal" function, a response to danger -- either external physical danger or internal psychological danger.

That is, anxiety is a central part of our existence. It is a source of creativity and drive; it spurs us to accomplishment. Great leaders, serial innovators, even top sales reps may be driven by a kind of inner demon -- the need to prove themselves, to achieve for fear of being worthless (or, as Freud postulated, for fear of castration).

But it's hard to argue with the result: Such people are incredibly productive. They drive change. And that cuts to the problem with a reductionist view of balance. Simply cutting back on work inevitably fails, because in real life, success in work is predicated on achievement. In a competitive business environment -- which is to say, every business environment -- leadership requires commitment, passion, and, to be blunt, a lot of time.

Thursday afternoon notes

What's been going on with me lately:
1. Dance parties and rock shows
2. Germans visiting
3. My birthday
4. Bike-riding
5. Couple good movies
6. Winter trip planning

1. I've been dancing and partying. Notable moment: Getting roughed up and then escorted out by security at the Girl Talk show after I climbed on-stage to dance with Greg Gillis. It's cool, though, because he randomly stopped by our party later that night at the Universal Space Agency ... no big deal. BTW, that concert sponsored by Creative Commons, Wired, and Flavorpill was disappointedly overbranded. Hey -- who wants to go see Third Eye Blind play the Altoid concert series at the Apple Store with me this Friday? I'm done with sponsored events.

2. Germans everywhere. My best German pals, Fabian and Mareen, arrived within the same week of each other in late September. Fabian came to celebrate our birthdays (his 9/25, mine 9/26). Mareen is actually living here until December while pursuing photography experience. Check out her Flickr feed. Tonight, Fabian's parents, Lucia and Konrad, are arriving to spend a week with me. We've become close since I spent a Summer in Viersen in 2003.

3. I turned 24. Went to a cabin in the Catskills with some friends. Great friendship event.

4. While in the Catskills, Kunal, Paul and I took couple of killer rides through Woodstock and Phoenicia. It was tough. Sometimes we would ride 1 mile straight downhill, and all the way down I could only obsess over how much it would hurt to ride back up. We rode about 65 miles total over the two days. Here's a map of our first day route.

5. Saw Science of Sleep and The Lives of Others. I loved both.

6. This season, I would like to go snowboarding at Whistler and Jackson Hole, and visit my friends Jeff and Margot in Vail. Booking my weekends now. Need new board pants ... love the 2007 Volcom line.

Wham City Round Robin @ USA

TOTALLY HUGE NEWS. This Friday and Saturday, the Universal Space Agency is hosting the first two nights of the Wham City Round Robin Tour. I realize this doesn't mean anything to you yet, but let me explain what this is and why it is incredible. It's 16 Baltimore bands (by Baltimore, I mean not only the city, but also the adjective 'mind-melting') playing round robin over 2 nights. Round robin means that each band will setup along the perimeter of the space and play one song each for 4 rounds -- all you have to do is stand in the center and spin! The first night is themed FEET, which means loud, raucous bands, and Saturday night is EYES for the quiet and trippy stuff.

If you didn't already know, Cex is one of my favorite live acts, and they are playing on Friday night. Do not miss the chance to see them in this unusual setting.

Even better news -- USA has annexed more space to make this possible. Yep, we got the place next door, so now we're 4,000 sqft of space to share with everyone.

The finer details: October 6th and 7th. 32B South 1st. 10pm. $5 at the door. Beer will be for sale.

The line-ups:
FEET (Friday)
Blood Baby
Butt Stomach
Cex
Dan Deacon
Height
OCDJ
Ponytail
Video Hippos

EYES (Saturday)
Boo Boos
Cache Cache
Ecstatic Sunshine
Lizz King
Ram Ones
Sand Cats
Santa Dads
Sports Ghosts
