Nearly a year ago, a stranger named Peter emailed me to say he had sketched a drawing of me and wanted to mail it over. I was surprised to receive a package from New Zealand.

A month ago he wrote again to say he had painted a portrait of me. It was time to start Googling around.

Peter turned out to be Peter Stichbury, an accomplished artist who, according to Wikipedia, is most reknown for intricate yet flat portraits of models and modern beauties sourced from contemporary media images, which he reworks to create abhorrently exquisite doe eyed specimens both startlingly attractive and awkwardly ugly. His work also explores those who don't measure up to conventional beauty ideals and who are therefore rendered socially invisible: misfits, outsiders and intellectuals.

In his latest update, he reported that the University of Auckland have the painting on hold for their collection. There's also a possibility that Starkwhite Gallery might take the painting to Art LA art fair in late January.

This is all very strange and thrilling and beautiful. I've quickly become an infatuated fan of his portraiture and am flattered to have been included.

As a boy, I grew up a couple doors down from a older kid named John Kavanagh. He introduced me to my first PC (and Sim City) and Outer Space, which certainly spawned my core interests which still prevail today. JetBlue’s new terminal known as T5 tops Northwest’s terminal in Detroit as my favorite in America. It’s nowhere as majestic as the NW’s, but it is wonderfully convenient. My highlights include the swank AeroNuova cocktail bar in the main concourse, seperate coffee and cocktail bars at individual gates (not across from the gate, but in the middle of the seating areas!), genuinely appealing shopping options (Muji and Borders) and as usual free wifi. One disappointment is the lack of electrical outlets for laptop toters like me — I’d never mind a delayed flight if I could endlessly watch Hulu at the gate. I’m still waiting for an airline to install an outlet under every seat at the gate, and in plane for that matter (As far as I know, Virgin is the only American carrier to feature the latter).

Bottomline, who needs a private airline lounge when you have T5?

OperaOggiNY, a production company is going to be reopening a theater on Berry Street between South 2nd and 3rd streets (two blocks from my place).

It’s a 600 seat, “theater” complete with 50 foot proscenium arch raked stage and a balcony, plenty of fly space with classic brick and wood and plaster construction has been found and is about to be opened to the public by a collaboration between OperaOggiNY and the St. Peter and Paul parish.
